From Istanbul to Halicarnassus
14 Days
Western Turkey Archaeology Tour starts in Istanbul, where we visit the very best of the city’s Byzantine and Ottoman remains, including the splendid Church of Haghia Sophia and the Topkapi Palace. Heading southwest, we take in Homer’s legendary Troy, then Assos, arguably the most beautifully situated ancient site on the Aegean seaboard. Pergamum, set on a dramatic rocky outcrop, is no less stunning and its extensive Hellenistic and Roman remains are a real treasure. Next up is Ephesus, one of the best preserved Classical era sites in the world, and important to Christians for its associations with the Virgin Mary and St Paul. There’s still time to visit a host of other classical sites south of Izmir, including the incredible temple at Didyma.
